Phishing - Internet Piracy. What You Need to Know!
There is a new type of internet piracy called "phishing" , pronounced fishing. That is exactly what this
piracy is about, Internet thieves trying to "fish" for your personal financial information, information
such as account numbers, passwords, Social Security numbers and other private information. In its worst
form, you could find yourself fighting off identity theft. Understanding how phishing works will help you
understand how to protect yourself.
In most cases you will receive an "official" email from a reputable business warning you of a serious
problem. It may use phrases such as "needs immediate attention", or "contact us immediately". You are
then encouraged to click on a button to go to that institutions website. You are directed to a phony
website and will probably be asked to provide or update account information. If you provide the
information, you may find yourself a victim of identity theft.
A few simple steps can help you protect yourself:
- Never provide your personal information in response to an unsolicited request.
- If you believe the contact may be legitimate, contact the financial institution yourself.
- Never provide your password over the phone or in response to an unsolicited Internet request.
- Review account statements regularly to ensure all charges are correct.
